Quick summary

Peripheral neuropathy is nerve damage in the hands and feet that shows up as numbness, burning, tingling or weakness. It has many causes, and diabetes is the most common one. At ChiroMed the approach is non-surgical and drug free: an examination first, then a program built from Neuromed electroanalgesia, cold laser therapy and, where the nerve is being compressed at the spine, decompression. The aim is symptom management, circulation and day-to-day function.

Understanding neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy is damage to the nerves that carry signals between the brain and spinal cord and the rest of the body. When those nerves are affected, the signals they send become unreliable, which is why the symptoms are so strange: numbness in one spot and burning in another, worse at night, often out of proportion to anything visible.

It is a condition, not a single disease. The U.S. National Library of Medicine keeps a plain-language overview of peripheral nerve disorders that is worth reading before any appointment. Neuropathy is generally understood to be a condition that is managed rather than undone, and nothing on this page promises otherwise.

Symptoms

Most people recognise their own version of neuropathy somewhere in this list. Each one maps to a specific finding the examination checks for.

  • Numbness in the feet, toes, hands or fingers
  • Burning or a scalding sensation, often worse at night
  • Pins and needles, or a tingling that comes and goes
  • Sharp, stabbing or electric-shock pain
  • Sensitivity to touch, including bedsheets on the feet
  • Loss of balance, or a feeling of walking on cushions
  • Weakness, or a heavy and unsteady leg
  • Cramping in the calves or the arches
  • Cold feet that do not warm up

Common causes

Diabetes and blood sugar

The most common cause, and the reason blood sugar control sits alongside any in-office program.

Nerve compression at the spine

A disc or a narrowed opening can affect the nerve root before it ever reaches the leg, which changes what the right treatment is.

Circulation

Nerves are metabolically demanding tissue, and reduced blood flow to the extremities shows up in how they behave.

Injury, chemotherapy and other medical causes

Where a cause sits outside this practice's scope, you will be told so.

Writer pending: causes depth, each mapping to a schema cause entry

Diabetic neuropathy

Diabetic neuropathy is the form that develops when raised blood sugar affects the peripheral nerves over time, most often starting in the feet. The U.S. National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases publishes a detailed guide to peripheral neuropathy in diabetes, including the warning signs that need medical attention rather than conservative care. ChiroMed works alongside that medical picture rather than in place of it.

How we treat neuropathy in Lakeland and The Villages

The program is assembled after the examination, not before it. Three disciplines carry most of it, and each one has its own page.

Neuromed electroanalgesia

Neuromodulation delivered in the office, aimed at the pain signalling itself rather than at masking it with medication.

Cold laser therapy

Low-level light applied to the affected region, used alongside the neuromodulation protocol.

Spinal decompression

Where the exam shows the nerve is being compressed at the spine rather than affected in the periphery.

When to seek care sooner

  • Numbness or weakness that is spreading, or that came on suddenly
  • A sore, ulcer or wound on a numb foot
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control
  • A fall caused by a leg giving way
  • Symptoms that started after a new medication or a course of chemotherapy

Any of these belongs with a physician, promptly, and not with conservative care alone.

Who you would be seeing

Dr. Justin Bergin, DC, 22 years in practice, performs the examination personally and explains the findings before any program starts. Lakeland: 6595 Florida Ave S, Suite 13, Lakeland. The Villages market office: 929 US-441 #404, Lady Lake. Both offices run the same program.

Options compared, honestly

Neuropathy is treated very differently depending on who you walk in to see. Here is the full set, including the options this practice does not provide.

Criteria Our approachNeuromed protocol Prescription nerve medicationNerve conduction studySurgical decompression
What it does Alters how the pain signal is carriedMeasures nerve function to make the picture objectiveReleases a specific trapped nerve
Invasiveness None, but systemic side effectsDiagnostic, mildly uncomfortableSurgery

Honest closer: if the examination points to a cause that belongs with a physician, you are told that at the exam. Neuropathy is managed, not undone, and any clinic promising otherwise is overselling.

What to expect

From evaluation to a plan for your neuropathy

A course, not a single visit. The examination decides the length and the cost, and both are written down first.

  1. Sensory assessment of a patient foot during a neuropathy evaluation
    01

    Sensory and neurological evaluation

Where the numbness starts and stops, what the reflexes and sensation testing show, and whether the pattern points to the periphery or to a compressed nerve root at the spine.

  2. Anatomical illustration used to explain where a nerve is being affected
    02

    Findings, in plain language

What the examination actually found, what is driving it, and honestly whether this is a case conservative care can help at all.

  3. A clinician setting out a care plan at the consulting desk
    03

    A written program

Which disciplines, how many visits, over what period, and what it costs. Decided here, before anything begins.

  4. Patients walking comfortably outdoors after a course of care
    04

    Reassessment as it runs

Sensation and function are re-measured through the course. If the response says the plan should change, it changes.

“I have had pain in my right upper back quadrant by my shoulder blade for at least a year now and the doctors have been unsuccessful in making the pain go away. I came to Dr. Bergin looking for some help. Within 3 to 4 weeks. My pain in that area is completely gone.”

Charlene L. Verified review

“Dr. Bergin is phenomenal. Chronic lower back issues led a different doctor to mention back surgery to me. That was not an option I wanted to entertain. After a consult with Dr. B, he was confident that he could help resolve my back issues. I’ve been seeing him weekly to resolve the issue, and I am so pleased with the results so far! More mobility, less pain, and a great customer experience.”
